In today’s post, we are sharing a Model IELTS essay in response to a Task 2 question. There are a few CRITICAL points to be observed for this Task. You will see how paying attention to these details will ensure a good score on the IELTS Writing module.
First, let’s look at the question:
Some people say that economic progress should be the main goal of a government.
To what extent do you agree?
This question is asking whether the MAIN goal of a government is economic progress. This question should be answered accurately to achieve a high score in terms of “Task response”. If you simply wrote that economic growth is important, you would lose marks since the question is not asking if economic growth should be a gpal. It is asking if it should be the MAIN goal.
Also, the question requires us to make “the extent of our agreement” clear.
Here’s the Model Essay:
Many leaders around the world regard economic prosperity as their main target and endeavour to achieve this objective at any cost. While it is often suggested that this agenda is defensible, I strongly support the notion that developing the education system, instead, should be given top priority.
Some people justifiably argue that success for a country is about raising a generation who are not only productive but also have self-esteem and integrity. To achieve this, progress in the area of education should take precedence over material goals. Indeed, people who are emotionally and intellectually mature are more likely to succeed in areas in which they become involved. An outstanding example is Finland. Thanks to their excellent education system, people reportedly feel greater fulfilment and consequently are more productive in their work.
In contrast, others insist that financial success is the secret to well-being. However, I question this view since, in my opinion, wealth is by no means the true measure of prosperity. There are countless examples of countries throughout history that waged war purely for economic benefit simply because they were not run by mature-minded officials. The repercussions of solely focusing on financial gain are unfortunately always regrettable. Therefore, assigning urgent priority to fiscal policies seems unwise.
To conclude, I believe that prioritising education should be the main task of governments. In my view, the psychological health of a nation is promoted through proper education, and this is the true measure of success. If this shift in focus were to occur, economic growth would ensue as a natural bi-product.
